Short answer: Christmas markets in Malta usually run from the last weekend of November to just before Christmas, mostly on weekends, and the 2026 dates had not been announced when I checked in October 2026. Based on past editions, the main ones to watch for are Heritage Malta’s “Christmas at the Fort” Christmas village at Fort St Elmo in Valletta (30 November and 1 December in 2024, free entry with €5 activities), Valletta’s street markets and Christmas lights, local council and parish markets in towns across Malta, and Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem in Gozo, a walk-through nativity village that ran on selected dates from 14 December 2025 to 4 January 2026. This guide lists what to expect, past dates as a guide, and where to check for 2026.
Christmas in Malta isn’t snow and wooden huts. It’s warm afternoons, cribs (presepji) in every church and many front windows, band marches, carols in squares, imbuljuta and mulled wine, and streets strung with lights. The markets are smaller and more local than in northern Europe, and that’s part of their charm.
A practical note on the weather: December days in Malta are often mild and sunny, but evenings get cool and damp, and a winter storm can cancel an outdoor market at short notice. Bring a jacket, wear shoes that can handle wet limestone, and check the organiser’s page on the day before you set off, especially if you’re crossing to Gozo.

Christmas at the Fort, Fort St Elmo
Heritage Malta’s Christmas village takes over Fort St Elmo at the tip of the Valletta peninsula for one weekend. The 2023 edition ran on 2 and 3 December, and the 2024 edition on Saturday 30 November (09:00–23:30) and Sunday 1 December (09:00–20:00). In 2024, entry was free, with activities at €5, and donations encouraged for the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.
Going by the 2024 programme, expect an artisan market with handmade local goods, food and drink stalls with mulled wine, imbuljuta (a warm chocolate and chestnut drink) and cocktails, a live chocolate sculpture, crib-making demonstrations, choirs and folk music, a Baby Jesus procession on the Saturday evening, and family activities with Santa. Heritage Malta ran a shuttle from Floriana Park and Ride, which is the easiest way in: parking near the fort is very limited.
The 2026 dates hadn’t been announced when checked. Keep an eye on Heritage Malta’s “What’s On” page from November.
Valletta Christmas events
Valletta is the heart of Christmas in Malta. Even without a market, an evening walk through the city in December is one of the best free plans of the year.

- The lights: Republic Street, Merchants Street and the squares are decorated from late November. Walking from City Gate to Fort St Elmo takes about 20 minutes.
- Castile Square and City Gate: usually home to a big Christmas tree and decorations.
- Cribs: many churches display elaborate presepji, and some have small exhibitions.
- Concerts and carols: churches, band clubs and Teatru Manoel run Christmas concerts. Check their pages in December.
- Street markets: Valletta has hosted artisan Christmas markets on its streets in past Decembers. Watch the Valletta Local Council’s pages for 2026 dates.
- New Year’s Eve: in recent years, the national celebration has been an open-air concert in Pjazza San Ġorġ with fireworks over the Grand Harbour (the 2024 edition was free to attend). The 2026 programme and entry arrangements hadn’t been announced.

If you’re out in the evening, the Valletta nightlife guide covers wine bars and getting home. Remember that the Valletta ferries run their winter timetable from 1 November, with early last sailings.
Town and village markets
Many local councils, parishes and schools run their own Christmas markets on December weekends, often in the main square after Mass or in a parish hall. In December 2025, for example, listings included markets in Rabat, Marsascala and St Paul’s Bay. They’re small, cheap and very local: home-made sweets, crafts, raffles, a band playing, and a lot of neighbours catching up. Check your local council’s Facebook page from mid-November.
Gozo: Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem
Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem is a walk-through nativity village in the fields of Għajnsielem, a short way up from Mġarr harbour. It recreates a village of the time, with artisans demonstrating traditional crafts, shepherds with real animals, actors in costume, a grotto and market scenes. The 2025–26 edition ran on selected dates from 14 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, with special school editions and an Adoration of the Magi at Epiphany.

Getting there: take the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr (€4.65 standard foot-passenger fare, validated in Gozo on the way back; a reduced night fare applies after 20:00 from November to March). Għajnsielem is close to the harbour. Check the organiser’s opening dates and times before you travel, and leave time for the ferry queue at weekends.
Maltese Christmas traditions worth knowing
The markets are only part of it. If you’re new to Malta, these are the things that make a Maltese Christmas feel different:
- Cribs everywhere. The presepju is the centrepiece of Christmas in Malta. Churches, band clubs, shop windows and private homes build them, some of them huge, with model villages, running water and lights. Some localities run crib trails or exhibitions in December.
- Christmas Eve processions. In many towns, children carry a statue of the Baby Jesus through the streets on Christmas Eve, with music and carols, before Midnight Mass.
- Midnight Mass. Churches are packed, and the sermon is traditionally given by a child. Afterwards, families head home for imbuljuta.
- Band marches and carols. Band clubs often play in the squares on December weekends.
- Christmas Day lunch. A family affair. Many restaurants are fully booked weeks ahead.
Where to check for 2026 dates
Most organisers announce Christmas events from mid-November, often only a week or two before. The places to watch:
- Heritage Malta’s “What’s On” page for Christmas at the Fort and events at its museums.
- Festivals Malta for national festive events and the Valletta Baroque Festival in January.
- Local council and parish Facebook pages for village markets, crib exhibitions and Christmas Eve processions.
- Valletta Waterfront’s events page, which already lists Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve 2026 events.
- Gozo listings and the Għajnsielem Local Council for Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem.
I’ll update the table above with confirmed 2026 dates as they’re published.
What to eat and drink
- Imbuljuta: a warm drink of chestnuts, cocoa and spices, traditionally served after Midnight Mass and at Christmas events.
- Mulled wine and hot chocolate: standard at the bigger markets.
- Local sweets: honey rings (qagħaq tal-għasel) and seasonal biscuits from village stalls.
- Street food: pastizzi and ftira are never far away.
Prices vary by stall, and none are published in advance, so bring some cash: smaller village stalls don’t always take cards.
Two ready-made December plans
A Valletta Saturday
Arrive in the early afternoon, walk down Republic Street to Fort St Elmo for the Christmas village (if it’s on that weekend), then walk back along the bastions as the lights come on. Finish with a glass of wine on Strait Street or dinner in a side street. Take the bus home, because the last ferry leaves early in winter. Cost: mostly free, plus food and drink.
A Gozo Sunday
Catch a morning ferry to Mġarr, have lunch in Victoria or by the harbour, then spend the late afternoon at Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem once its 2026 dates are out. Come back on an evening ferry. Cost: €4.65 each for the ferry, plus lunch and entry. Book lunch, as Gozo is busy on December Sundays.
Planning a Christmas market day with friends
- Pick one big market and one walk. For example, Christmas at the Fort in the afternoon, then the lights on Republic Street after dark.
- Go early on the weekend. The bigger events are busiest in the evening.
- Use the bus or the shuttle. Parking in Valletta in December is very hard.
- Agree who pays. Usually pay your own; the host can buy the first round of imbuljuta.
- Combine it with a long weekend. Tuesday 8 December 2026 is a public holiday (take the Monday off), and Christmas Day falls on a Friday. The full list is in Malta public holidays.
For more of what’s on before and after Christmas, see the Malta events calendar and events in Malta in November. The Christmas lights are also on the list of free things to do in Malta.

Want to turn this into an actual plan? MeetNow is a free app for meeting people in person: a host posts a plan at a public place, says who pays (host pays, split, pay your own or free) and picks who joins. It is live in Malta now on the web, with the iPhone and Android apps coming to the App Store and Google Play soon: open MeetNow and see this week’s plans in Valletta, Sliema and St Julian’s.
