Short answer: Isle of MTV Malta is a huge free open-air concert held every summer on the Granaries (Il-Fosos Square) in Floriana, just outside Valletta. The 2026 edition took place on Wednesday 22 July 2026 with Katy Perry headlining, Afrojack and the Maltese singer Aidan on the bill, and a week of paid club nights around it. No date or line-up has been announced for 2027 yet. Based on recent years, expect it in July, with free tickets released online a few weeks before and snapped up fast.
People go to Isle of MTV in big groups, as couples and on their own. It is a great night, but it is also tens of thousands of people funnelling into one square in July heat, with one main way out at the end. This guide is about getting the good parts and avoiding the bad ones.
Last checked: October 2026. Everything about 2027 below is an expectation based on past editions, not an announcement.
What Isle of MTV Malta is
Isle of MTV Malta is a one-night concert organised by MTV in partnership with the Malta Tourism Authority. It is billed as Europe’s largest free music festival, and the 2026 edition was its 18th. The format has stayed much the same for years: an international pop headliner, a big-name DJ, one or more Maltese acts, and a crowd of tens of thousands on the Granaries, the vast open square in Floriana where the old underground grain silos are.
The show is filmed and later broadcast on MTV’s international channels, so the stage, lights and production are on a different scale from a normal local concert. For many people in Malta it is the one big free summer gig of the year, and for students on summer English courses it is often the highlight of their stay.
A few things make it different from a ticketed festival:
- Entry is free but not open. You need a ticket obtained through the official channel, and they run out.
- It is one evening. Doors in the afternoon, acts into the night, and then everyone leaves at the same time.
- It sits inside a week of paid events. Malta Music Week wraps around the concert with after-parties, a boat party and pool parties, all ticketed separately.

Isle of MTV Malta 2026: what happened
The 2026 concert was held on Wednesday 22 July 2026 on Il-Fosos Square in Floriana. The announced line-up was:
| Act | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Katy Perry | Headliner | Her first performance in Malta and her Isle of MTV debut |
| Afrojack | DJ | Also played the official after-party at Gianpula Village |
| Aidan | Maltese act | Maltese pop singer, announced with the first acts |
| Further Maltese performers and DJs | Support | Announced closer to the date |
The concert was filmed for broadcast on MTV’s international networks in September 2026. Malta Public Transport ran special late-night buses after the show (more on that below), and Malta Music Week filled the rest of the week with club nights from Wednesday 22 to Sunday 26 July.
One note on dates: a couple of travel blogs listed the 2026 concert as mid-July before the official announcement. The date confirmed by the organisers and by Malta Public Transport’s bus notice was 22 July. If you see conflicting dates for 2027, trust the official Isle of MTV site and the Malta Tourism Authority, not a reposted listing.
Isle of MTV Malta 2027: what to expect
As of October 2026, nothing about Isle of MTV Malta 2027 has been announced: no date, no line-up, no ticket release. Here is what past editions suggest, so you can plan around it.
- When: recent editions have been held in July, on a weekday evening rather than a weekend. If you are booking flights or leave for summer 2027, keep the second half of July flexible until the date is out.
- Announcement: the headliner is usually revealed in late spring or early summer, with further acts added in the following weeks.
- Tickets: free tickets are released online through the official channel a few weeks before the show, alongside a paid front-of-stage option.
- Music Week: expect another run of paid club nights around the concert.
The best way to catch the announcement is to follow the official Isle of MTV channels and the Malta Tourism Authority’s events page. We will update this page once 2027 details are public, and our Malta events calendar lists the dated events between now and then.
How the free tickets work
This is the part that confuses people every year. “Free” does not mean you can just walk up on the night.
- Watch for the release. Free tickets are released online through the official ticketing link on the Isle of MTV site. In 2026, the official site linked to its ticketing partner for both the free general admission and the paid front-of-stage option.
- Register quickly. Free tickets have historically gone fast once released, often within hours. Have your account ready and be online when the release opens.
- One ticket per person. Expect tickets to be personal. Do not buy “free” tickets from resellers: they may not be valid, and you have no way to check.
- Front of stage is the paid option. If you want to be close to the stage, the paid front-of-stage ticket is the official way to do it.
- Read the entry rules on the ticket. Gate times, bag rules and prohibited items are set by the organisers each year and printed with the ticket. Check them the day before, not in the queue.
If the free tickets run out, you can still enjoy the night in Valletta and Floriana. The atmosphere around the venue is huge and many bars nearby fill up with people heading to the after-parties.
Malta Music Week: the paid nights around the concert
Around the free concert, Isle of MTV runs Malta Music Week, a series of ticketed parties. The 2026 programme, as published on the official site, was:
| Date (2026) | Event | Headline act |
|---|---|---|
| Wed 22 July | Official Isle of MTV After Party (Gianpula Village) | Afrojack |
| Thu 23 July | Boat Party | Not specified |
| Fri 24 July | G7 Fridays | Nervo |
| Sat 25 July | Café del Mar Special | Gordo |
| Sun 26 July | Pool Party at Toy Room Beach | Dizzee Rascal |
Prices varied by event and package, and were listed on the official ticketing pages. If you are planning a whole week, work out the transport for each venue first: Gianpula Village is in the countryside near Rabat, while Café del Mar is in Qawra, at the opposite end of the island from the Granaries.

What the night is actually like
If you have never been, here is roughly how an Isle of MTV evening goes, based on past editions. Exact gate and set times change every year and are published with the tickets.
- Late afternoon: the queues start forming around Floriana while it is still hot. People who want a good spot near the front of the general admission area arrive early and wait in the sun. If you are not fussed about being close, there is no need to queue for hours.
- Early evening: the support acts and DJs warm up the crowd. This is the best time to get a drink, find the toilets and work out where your exits are.
- After dark: the headliner. The square is at its fullest, the TV cameras are rolling, and it is very hard to move. Stay where you are unless you really need to leave.
- The end: everyone leaves at once. The roads towards the Valletta terminus fill up, the special buses start running, and the after-party crowd heads to the coaches and taxis.
Two honest downsides. First, the July heat: July nights in Malta often stay well above 25°C, and it feels hotter in a packed crowd, so water matters more than anything. Second, the exit: it can take a long time to reach a bus or taxi, and the first departures are always the fullest. Many groups wait twenty or thirty minutes in a quieter corner of Floriana or Valletta before heading for transport, and have a much easier time of it.
What to bring: a small bag (or none), a fully charged phone, a power bank if allowed, your ticket on your phone and a printed backup, ID, a refillable water bottle if the entry rules allow it, and a light layer for the bus ride home. Leave anything valuable you do not need at home.
Getting there and getting home
Floriana is right next to the Valletta bus terminus, which makes getting there easy. Getting home is the hard bit, because tens of thousands of people leave at once.
Getting home box. What worked in 2026, and what to check for 2027:
- Special late-night buses: for the 2026 concert, Malta Public Transport ran special routes from Valletta from 23:00, at regular intervals through the night (S12, S20, S40, S41, S47, S51, S61, S72, S80, S85, S90 and S94), plus extra departures on the regular night routes N3, N13, N48, N52, N62, N71, N82 and N91. They covered Sliema, St Julian’s, Qawra, Buġibba, Mellieħa, Mosta, Rabat, Mtarfa, Żebbuġ, Marsaskala, Marsaxlokk, Birżebbuġa, Xgħajra and the Three Cities.
- Fares in 2026: free with a valid personalised tallinja card, otherwise €3 paid on board by cash or contactless.
- Expect a similar notice for 2027: Malta Public Transport usually publishes the special service a day or two before. Look for it on publictransport.com.mt and the tallinja app.
- Taxis and ride-hailing: Bolt, eCabs and Uber all operate, but prices surge and the roads around Floriana are congested. Walk towards Pietà or into Valletta before booking.
- Ferry: the Sliema and Three Cities ferries leave from the Valletta side, but they do not run all night. Check the last crossing before you rely on it.

Safety and comfort on the night
Safety box.
- Heat: July in Malta is hot even after sunset. Drink water, eat before you go, and take a break at the edges of the crowd.
- Crowd: agree on a meeting point outside the square in case you get separated; phone signal often drops in big crowds.
- Belongings: carry as little as possible. Keep your phone in a front pocket or a zipped bag.
- Drinks: never leave a drink unattended and do not accept open drinks from strangers.
- Emergencies: the European emergency number 112 works in Malta. Medical and security staff are usually visible around the venue.
Going with friends, or going alone
Isle of MTV is best in a group. You hold a spot together, take turns at the bar, and share the way home. A few tips:
- Get everyone’s ticket on the same day. Free tickets run out, so agree in advance who is going and register as soon as the release opens.
- Meet before the gates. Pick somewhere easy near the Valletta bus terminus or in Floriana, eat together, and walk in as a group.
- Agree on the plan for after. Some people want the after-party, some want the first bus home. Decide before the headliner starts, not after.
- Split the extras. If you go on to a paid after-party or take a taxi home, split it. If one person is driving, the others cover their parking or fuel.
Going alone is also fine. The crowd is friendly and young, and lots of people go in pairs or on their own. Stand near the side, say hello to the people next to you during the support acts, and you will probably end up watching the headliner with new friends. If you then want to keep the night going, our Malta nightlife guide covers where to go next, and the Malta festa calendar lists the village feasts that fill the same summer weekends.
