Birthday Ideas Malta 2026: 15 Plans, Costs and Who Pays

Short answer: the best birthday ideas Malta has to offer are group plans with a clear cost: bowling at The Eden (€9.95 per adult), an escape room for a small team, a wine tasting at Delicata (€28 per person), a beach club gazebo for three (€160 at Café del Mar in 2026), a guided kayak trip in Gozo (€60 per person) or a free night at a village festa in summer. Below are 15 plans with checked prices, how many people they suit and a simple rule for who pays, so the birthday person is not left doing the maths.

Birthdays in Malta are easy to celebrate and surprisingly easy to get wrong. The restaurant is booked out, half the group cannot afford the beach club, someone suggests “something chill” and the night ends at a kebab shop. The fix is choosing a plan that fits the group and saying upfront what it costs and who pays.

Prices last checked: October 2026. Seasonal plans are marked.

The 15 birthday plans

1. Bowling at The Eden (€9.95)

The classic mixed-group birthday. No skill needed, built-in breaks for conversation, and the cinema and bars of St George’s Bay are next door for afterwards. Who pays: everyone pays their own game; the group buys the birthday person’s. On a rainy day it is also one of the easiest plans to move indoors at the last minute.

2. An escape room

Can You Escape Malta moved from Fgura to Ta’ Qali in October 2024. Its rooms are themed 60-minute games, with listings including a prison break (Behind Bars), The Forbidden Castle and a detective murder mystery. Escape rooms are priced per group or per player, and team sizes vary by room, so check the booking page before you invite people. A themed room works especially well for a birthday because the clock gives the hour a shape: everyone has a job, the quiet people often turn out to be the best at the puzzles, and you leave with a story for dinner. Who pays: split the room equally; the birthday person plays free if the group agrees.

3. A wine tasting at Delicata (€28)

A seated tasting of five Delicata wines (D.O.K. Malta, D.O.K. Gozo and I.G.T. Maltese Islands) with fresh Maltese bread and extra virgin olive oil at the Delicata winery, €28 per person including VAT. Sessions last about 60 to 90 minutes and are hosted in English. The rules matter for planning: groups are limited to 18 people, it is by reservation only with no sales at the door, and everyone must be at least 17. Grown-up and easy to book. Who pays: pay your own tickets. Details in our wine tasting Malta guide.

4. A beach club gazebo (€160 for three)

For a summer birthday, a gazebo or VIP sofa at Café del Mar in Qawra gives the group a shaded base by the pool for the day. 2026 prices: gazebo for three €160, VIP sofa for four €180, luxury beds for two €150–€200. The 2026 season ends on Sunday 25 October. Who pays: split the bed; food and drinks pay your own. See our Malta beach clubs guide.

5. A guided kayak trip in Gozo (€60)

Kayak Gozo’s three-hour tours from Ħondoq ir-Rummien paddle along the coast and towards Comino. Active, memorable and good for groups of friends who like the sea. Who pays: pay your own place; split taxis. Full details in our kayaking Malta plan cards.

6. A dance social (€10)

La Sociale at the Barceló Fortina in Sliema runs a workshop from 20:30 on Saturdays, then social dancing. A birthday where everyone learns something and nobody has to talk over a DJ. Who pays: pay your own entry.

7. A games night (€7)

English Café Malta’s games, karaoke and social nights run on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 19:30 in the Sliema and St Julian’s area, €7 each. Good for a low-key birthday, especially if you are new and want to mix friends with new faces. Who pays: pay your own.

8. A Gozo day (€4.65 ferry)

A full day on Gozo for the price of a coffee and a pastry: Gozo Channel’s foot-passenger fare is €4.65 return. Beach in summer, walk in winter, dinner in Xlendi either way. Who pays: pay your own ferry; split taxis; the group treats the birthday person to dinner.

9. A sunset picnic at Dingli Cliffs

Bring food, drinks and a cake to the highest cliffs in Malta and watch the sun go into the sea. Cheap, beautiful and very easy to organise. Who pays: everyone brings something; the host brings the cake. Check the last bus back.

10. Harbour ferry and dinner in Valletta (€3 ferry)

Meet in Sliema, take the €3 ferry across to Valletta at sunset, then dinner and a drink on Strait Street. The ferry ride is the bit everyone remembers. Who pays: pay your own ferry; the group covers the birthday person’s dinner.

11. Rooftop drinks with a view

A table on a rooftop bar overlooking the harbour makes a simple drink feel like an occasion. Book on weekends. Who pays: rounds or pay your own; birthday person’s drinks on the group. Our list of the best rooftop bars in Malta has the views.

12. A village festa night (free)

If your birthday falls between May and September, chances are a village somewhere is celebrating its patron saint that weekend: band marches, fireworks and street food, all free. Who pays: pay your own food; the group gets the birthday person a nougat. Find the date in our Malta festa calendar.

13. Esplora or the aquarium (€15 / €16.90)

Esplora, the interactive science centre in Kalkara, costs €15 for adults with free planetarium shows; the Malta National Aquarium in Qawra is €16.90 online. Playful birthdays for adults who still like buttons. Who pays: pay your own.

14. A pub crawl (about €12–€25)

For an 18+ group that wants a big night, a Paceville crawl with welcome drinks and club entry sorts the route for you. Who pays: each person books a ticket.

15. A boat party (summer)

In July and August, evening boat parties leave Sliema with a DJ and drinks. Book together so you are on the same boat. Who pays: pay your own ticket.

A birthday when you are new to Malta

If you have only recently moved and your friends here are new, a birthday is actually a good excuse to grow the group. Pick a plan where people who do not know each other have something to do together, such as bowling, a games night, an escape room or a dance social, rather than a dinner where everyone has to make conversation across a long table. Invite a mix: colleagues, classmates, the person from your language exchange, a neighbour. Keep the cost low and clear so nobody feels obliged, and suggest an optional second stop afterwards for those who want to stay out. A plan built like that usually ends with a few new numbers in everyone’s phone, which is the best present when you are building a life somewhere new.

Who pays on a birthday in Malta?

There is no single rule, but there are three common ways groups handle it:

  • The birthday person hosts and pays. Usually for a small dinner or a round of drinks. If that is the plan, say “my treat” in the invitation so nobody brings their wallet out awkwardly.
  • Everyone pays their own, the group covers the birthday person. The most common arrangement for group activities. Split the birthday person’s ticket or meal between the rest.
  • Everyone pays their own, full stop. Fine for bigger, looser plans like a festa or a pub crawl. Say so upfront.

Whatever you choose, put it in the first message. Nobody minds paying €10 for bowling; what people mind is finding out at the end.

Invitations you can copy

  • “Birthday bowling at The Eden on Saturday at 19:00! €9.95 each, pay your own, drinks after next door. I’m buying the first round.”
  • “For my birthday I’ve booked a gazebo at Café del Mar on Sunday the 25th, last day of the season. €160 for three, so about €53 each. Who’s in?”
  • “Sunset picnic at Dingli on Friday for my birthday. Bring something to share, I’ll bring the cake. Last bus back is the plan.”

Tips for a smooth birthday plan

  • Book early for weekends: bowling lanes, rooftop tables and gazebos fill up.
  • Check seasonal plans: beach clubs and boat parties are summer-only.
  • Plan the way home, especially from Qawra, Gozo or Dingli at night.
  • Mix budgets: if the group has very different budgets, pick a cheaper plan and add an optional extra (dinner after) rather than leaving people out.
  • Cake logistics: many restaurants allow a cake if you ask in advance; some charge a small fee.
