Short answer: Malta roadworks this autumn mostly hit you through bus detours. Malta Public Transport’s Latest Service Updates, as listed on 18 October 2026, show construction detours on night route N71 (with routes 71, 117 and 218) until 31 December, on night route N120 and routes 25, 31, 110, 120, 121, 182, 204, 210, 238, 260 and 280 until 2 November, on routes 72 and 201 until 31 December, and a weeknight detour on route 133 from 20:00 to 05:00 until 24 October, plus evening detours on routes 260 and 46 (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 20:00–05:00, until 22 October) and a run of one-day and overnight detours around 19–20 October. If you are going out, check the service updates page and the tallinja app before you leave, and use Transport Malta’s streetworks map for road closures.
Roadworks are part of life in Malta, and most of the time they cost you ten minutes. The ones that hurt are the evening and overnight detours, because that is when buses are less frequent and a diverted stop can mean a long wait in the wrong place. This explainer pulls together what was published for the coming weeks and how to work around it.

Source: Malta Public Transport, Latest Service Updates, as listed on 18 October 2026 and re-checked the same day. This is a snapshot: short detours drop off the list once they end, and new ones are added every week, so treat this table as a guide to the coming weeks and check the live page on the day you travel. The detour notices give route numbers and times; open each notice for the exact diverted stops.

What it means for nights out
Most construction detours are in daytime, but several affect evenings and night travel directly:
- Night route N71 is on a construction detour until the end of the year, together with day routes 71, 117 and 218. If you use the N71 home after a night out in Valletta or Paceville, check where it now stops.
- Night route N120 is on a construction detour until 2 November: towards Xgħajra, stops from Felic through Industrijali are not served. Day routes 120, 121 and 110 have the same detour.
- Route 133 is diverted on weeknights from 20:00 to 05:00 until 24 October.
- Overnight works on 19–20 October divert routes 106, 54, 181, 182, 214, 50 and 56 from 20:00 to about 05:00.
- Routes 260 and 46 are diverted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 20:00 to 05:00 until 22 October; on route 260, stops between Mnara and Zerafa are skipped in both directions.
Night routes run on set times and are less frequent than day routes, so a diverted stop matters more. Our night bus Malta guide explains how the night network works, fares (€3, free with a personalised tallinja card) and the routes from Valletta and Paceville.
Events cause detours too
Not every detour is about construction. Malta Public Transport also diverts routes for events: on Sunday 18 October 2026, for example, routes 72, 74, 117 and 218 were listed on an event detour between 11:00 and 13:00. Festas, marathons, processions, concerts and big nights in Valletta and Floriana all close roads for a few hours, usually with notices published a few days before. If you are heading to an event, assume the roads around it will be busy or closed, plan to arrive by bus to the nearest hub or by ferry, and walk the last part. Our Malta events calendar lists the big dates coming up, so you can see which weekends are likely to bring closures.
Where to check roadworks and detours
- Malta Public Transport, Latest Service Updates: the official list of bus detours, with start and end times and diverted stops for each route.
- The tallinja app: journey planner and live times; check your stop the day you travel.
- Transport Malta Streetworks Portal: an interactive live map of permitted streetworks, searchable by permit, street and locality.
- Infrastructure Malta roadworks page: major road projects and closures by locality, with start and scheduled completion dates.
- Police notices in the Government Gazette: traffic arrangements for events, processions and works, often noting whether public transport is diverted.

What to do instead
- Take the ferry. The Valletta–Sliema ferry and the harbour ferry to the Three Cities avoid road traffic entirely in the evening; check the last crossing. Our Valletta–Sliema ferry guide has the winter timetable change.
- Walk the last stretch. If a detour moves your stop a few streets away, a short walk is often faster than waiting.
- Try On Demand. Malta Public Transport also offers an On Demand service at night, booked in the tallinja app, where you choose where and when to be picked up and dropped off.
- Share a ride. Bolt, eCabs and Uber work around closures, and splitting the fare between friends keeps it cheap.
- Meet closer to the main routes. If you are hosting a plan, pick a venue near a major bus corridor or ferry landing during heavy works.
- Leave earlier. Daytime detours can add delays; give yourself a buffer for anything time-critical, including the Gozo ferry.

A two-minute check before a night out
- Open the service updates page and search for your outbound and return route numbers, including the night route.
- Open the detour notice for any match and note the diverted stops and the time window.
- Check the journey planner in the tallinja app for the time you plan to come home, not the time you leave.
- Agree a backup with friends: who has a ride-hailing app, who is sharing a car, which ferry is the fallback.
- Save the venue address and the nearest main road, so a taxi can find you quickly if a street is closed.
If you get stuck after a detour
It happens: you walk to your usual stop and the bus never comes because it is running a different way that night. What to do:
- Check the notice again on your phone; the diverted stop is often one or two streets away.
- Head for a main corridor where several routes pass, rather than waiting at a quiet stop.
- Book a ride from a lit, busy spot, and share the trip with a friend.
- Stay together. If you are out in a group, leave as a group; the walk to a diverted stop is safer and more fun in company.
- In an emergency, call 112.
Why there are so many roadworks
Malta’s road network is dense and heavily used, and works range from major reconstruction projects to utility trenches, resurfacing and private construction permits. Many are scheduled at night or overnight to reduce daytime disruption, which is exactly why they can catch out people heading home late. Notices are published in several places (bus operator, Transport Malta, Infrastructure Malta, police notices), so the safest habit is to check the bus updates on the day you travel.
Malta roadworks FAQ
Which night buses are affected by roadworks in autumn 2026?
Malta Public Transport lists construction detours on night route N71 (with routes 71, 117 and 218) until 31 December 2026, and on night route N120 until 2 November 2026. Check the service updates page for diverted stops.
Where can I see road closures in Malta?
Use Transport Malta’s Streetworks Portal live map, Infrastructure Malta’s roadworks page and police notices in the Government Gazette. For buses, check Malta Public Transport’s Latest Service Updates.
How do I know if my bus is on a detour?
Check Malta Public Transport’s Latest Service Updates page or the tallinja app on the day you travel; each detour notice gives the route, the times and the diverted stops.
Plan around the works
Roadworks are rarely a reason to cancel a plan. Pick a venue near the ferry or a main bus corridor, check the detours before you go, and share the ride home.
Want to turn this into an actual plan? MeetNow is a free app for meeting people in person: a host posts a plan at a public place, says who pays (host pays, split, pay your own or free) and picks who joins. It is live in Malta now on the web, with the iPhone and Android apps coming to the App Store and Google Play soon: open MeetNow and see this week’s plans in Valletta, Sliema and St Julian’s.
