Short answer: the Valletta cultural agenda for winter 2026–27 is built around Christmas. The Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA), which announced a €4.5 million cultural programme for 2026 in February, brings back Christmas in the Capital from 25 November to 31 December 2026, with street decorations, a nativity crib, the city’s Christmas tree, live performances and family activities, culminating in the National New Year’s Eve celebrations. Before that, Festivals Malta’s The Three Palaces festival runs in late October and early November, and in the new year the Valletta Baroque Festival (7–24 January 2027) and Malta Carnival (5–9 February 2027) take over the capital. Most of the VCA’s Christmas programme is free.
Valletta in winter is a different city from summer: cooler evenings, fewer cruise crowds, and a programme that turns the streets into an outdoor living room. If you are planning plans with friends from now until Carnival, this is the calendar to work from.

What the Valletta Cultural Agency announced for 2026
In February 2026 the Valletta Cultural Agency unveiled its 2026 Cultural Programme, budgeted at €4.5 million, alongside a survey by Prof. Vincent Marmara on footfall and business in Valletta over Christmas 2025. The agency said the survey showed strong December footfall, with many visitors coming more than once, and that most Valletta businesses reported stable or higher income than the year before. Heritage, Arts and Local Government Minister Owen Bonnici said the investment reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a “vibrant and dynamic Valletta”. The programme as announced:
| Event | 2026 dates | Status now |
|---|---|---|
| Malta Biennale 26 (second edition) | 11 March – 29 May | Over |
| Valletta Green Festival (12th edition), St George’s Square | 30 April – 10 May | Over |

Festivals Malta, not the VCA, runs Notte Bianca, which took over Valletta in early October; see our Notte Bianca Malta guide for what to expect next year.

Christmas in the Capital: what to expect
Christmas in the Capital is the VCA’s biggest recurring winter event. According to the agency, it transforms the heart of Valletta with street decorations, a nativity crib and the Christmas tree that has become a symbol of the city’s festive season, plus live performances, street animation and family activities. In 2026 the agency lists it from 25 November to 31 December, from 08:00 to midnight across the city centre, ending with the National New Year’s Eve celebrations in St George’s Square.
Practical notes:
- Best time to go: weekday evenings, when the lights are on and the crowds are thinner. Weekends in December are packed.
- Getting there: bus to the Valletta terminus or the ferry from Sliema; parking in December is hard.
- Getting home: check the night routes and last ferry; our night bus Malta guide has the details.
- Cost: walking around, the lights and most performances are free; food, drinks and anything you buy are not.

Who the Valletta Cultural Agency is
The VCA is the public agency responsible for cultural programming in Malta’s capital. It is based at the Exchange Buildings on Republic Street and publishes its events and resources, including its annual cultural programme, on its website. It works alongside Festivals Malta, which runs the national festivals such as the Baroque Festival, Carnival and Notte Bianca, and with local organisations across the city. Funding of the 2026 programme was presented as an investment in Valletta’s footfall and businesses, backed by surveys of the 2025 Christmas season.
Going with friends: easy winter plans in Valletta
- A Christmas lights walk from City Gate down Republic Street to St George’s Square, with a hot drink in a café on the way. Free apart from what you eat and drink; pay your own.
- A Three Palaces concert in late October or early November: buy tickets together and have dinner on Strait Street after.
- New Year’s Eve in the capital: free to attend, very busy; agree a meeting point and a way home in advance. Our New Year’s Eve Malta guide covers the options.
- A Baroque Festival evening in January, when Valletta is quiet and the churches and palaces host concerts.
How to keep up with the agenda
- The VCA website: its events page lists upcoming events in Valletta, and its resources page holds the annual cultural programme.
- The VCA’s Facebook page: where last-minute details, times and changes usually appear first.
- Festivals Malta: the calendar for national festivals held in the capital, including the Baroque Festival and Carnival, with ticket links.
- Bus updates: big events in Valletta and Floriana often come with road closures and bus detours; check Malta Public Transport’s service updates before you go. Our Malta roadworks explainer shows how.
A useful habit: on the first of each month, check these sources and put two dates in your calendar, one free and one ticketed. Then invite people early. December weekends fill fast, and a plan made in the middle of November is much easier to keep than one improvised on the day.
Winter in Valletta beyond the programme
The official agenda is only part of the picture. In winter, Valletta’s theatres and concert halls run their own seasons, churches host concerts in the run-up to Christmas, and the bars of Strait Street and Merchants Street stay busy on Friday and Saturday evenings. The capital is also small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes, so you can catch the lights at City Gate, a performance in St George’s Square and a drink on a side street in one evening. For a daytime introduction to the city, a free walking tour from City Gate is a good start.
Why the agenda matters for plans
A cultural agenda is a calendar of reasons to meet up. Free events lower the barrier for inviting someone new, ticketed ones give a group a fixed time and place, and Valletta’s compact streets mean you can combine an event with dinner and a drink without taking a single bus. For people new to Malta, winter is also when the island’s social life shifts from beaches to city centres, so the capital’s programme becomes the backbone of many weekends. The trick is to pick one event a month and turn it into a plan: who is going, where you meet and who pays for what.
