Pickleball Malta 2026: Where to Play, Clubs and Beginners

Short answer: pickleball Malta-style is small, friendly and growing. Malta Pickleball, founded in 2019 by Steffi Pace Girard, charges €24 a year for membership (pro rata), points players to Sports Booking Malta for court bookings and runs a 2026 calendar of tournaments and socials at De La Salle College in Birgu, including a team event on 21 November and a Christmas social on 13 December. Pickleball Hub MT, a sponsor of the association, has two outdoor floodlit courts at the Għargħur football ground. It is one of the easiest racket sports to pick up, and doubles means you meet three people every game.

If tennis feels like too much running and padel too much glass, pickleball is the sweet spot: a badminton-sized court, a solid paddle, a perforated plastic ball and rules you can learn in ten minutes. In Malta it has a tight community, which makes it a great way to meet people quickly.

What pickleball is, in one minute

  • Court: badminton-sized, with a net slightly lower than a tennis net. Indoor or outdoor.
  • Kit: a solid-faced paddle and a light perforated plastic ball.
  • Format: mostly doubles, which is why it is so social.
  • Serve: underarm, diagonal. Easy for beginners, so rallies start fast.
  • The “kitchen”: a non-volley zone near the net that stops players smashing everything from close range. It is the one rule everyone forgets on day one.

Games go to 11 points (win by 2), so you rotate partners and opponents quickly at socials.

Why pickleball is good for meeting people

Pickleball’s social format is built in. At club socials, players rotate after each game, so in an evening you can play with and against a dozen people. Doubles keeps everyone talking, the short games mean nobody sits out long, and levels mix easily because the learning curve is gentle. In a small country like Malta, the regulars get to know each other fast; turn up twice and people remember your name.

Your first session

Your first session box.

  • Start with a lesson or a social. Email Malta Pickleball and ask about the next beginner-friendly session or social, or look for introduction sessions run by certified instructors such as Steffi Pace Girard, who has led club introduction sessions at Marsa Sports Club.
  • Or book a court with friends: book a court at Pickleball Hub MT and ask when you book whether paddles and balls can be borrowed.
  • Shoes: non-marking court shoes with good lateral support; running shoes are not ideal for quick sideways movement.
  • Bring: water and a towel; outdoor courts get hot in summer, so play early or under lights.
  • Learn three rules first: underarm serve, the two-bounce rule (the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys), and stay out of the kitchen when volleying.
  • Getting there: Għargħur and Naxxar are on bus routes from Valletta and Sliema; evening sessions may need a lift home.

Malta Pickleball’s 2026 calendar and national squads

Malta Pickleball publishes its events on its website. The autumn 2026 calendar lists a Malta Pickleball Tournament for adults and kids on 16 October, a Team Event for 18+ and 50+ players on 21 November and a Christmas Social on 13 December, all at De La Salle College in Birgu. A social is the obvious first event for a newcomer: mixed levels, rotating partners and a relaxed atmosphere.

The association also keeps national rankings based on DUPR ratings and sends squads abroad. Its players have competed at the World Pickleball Championships in Málaga, where Steffi Pace Girard and Lee Camenzuli won gold in the 35+ mixed doubles at level 4.5+, and an intermediate-plus selection of 19+ and 50+ players represented Malta at an international tournament in Algarrobo, Spain, with the 50+ team reaching the semi-finals. For a small island, it is a surprisingly competitive scene, but the socials remain firmly beginner-friendly.

What a beginner social actually feels like

If you have never been to a pickleball social, here is the honest picture. You arrive a little nervous, someone hands you a paddle, and within five minutes you are on court with three strangers, two of whom are also on their first or second go. The first few rallies are chaotic: balls into the net, the occasional whiff, plenty of laughing. By the third game you are serving properly, by the fifth you are arguing cheerfully about whether a ball was in. The rotation means you play with almost everyone, so by the end of the evening you have a dozen first names and probably an invitation to the next session.

That is the real reason pickleball has grown so fast in so many countries: it is genuinely social, and it is very hard to be bad enough at it to feel left out.

Doubles scoring, explained once

The one thing that confuses every beginner is the score, because doubles pickleball uses three numbers. The serving team calls its own score first, then the opponents’ score, then whether it is the first or second server on that team, for example “4–2–1”. Only the serving team can win a point. When the serving team loses a rally, the second partner serves; when both have lost their serve, the serve passes to the other side. The very first service turn of a game is the exception: it starts as “0–0–2”, so only one player serves before the side changes. Games are usually to 11, and you must win by two. Do not worry about getting it right on day one: someone at the court will call it for you, and after a couple of sessions it becomes automatic.

Pickleball for every age

Pickleball’s gentle learning curve makes it one of the few sports where very different ages can share a court. Malta Pickleball’s own calendar reflects that, with a tournament for adults and kids in October and a team event split into 18+ and 50+ categories in November. For families, a weekend court booking with a mix of parents and teenagers is an easy plan, and for older players returning to sport, the short court and underarm serve mean less strain on knees and shoulders than tennis. As with any sport, warm up properly, drink plenty of water on hot days, and stop if something hurts. A short session played often is better than a long one once a month.

Common first-game mistakes (and easy fixes)

  • Hitting too hard. The ball is light; soft, controlled shots win more points than smashes.
  • Volleying from the kitchen. If your feet are in the non-volley zone, let the ball bounce first.
  • Forgetting the two-bounce rule. After the serve, the return must bounce, and so must the next shot.
  • Standing too far back. Get to the kitchen line as soon as you can; that is where points are won.
  • Calling the score wrong. Doubles scoring has three numbers. Ask someone to call it for you on day one; everyone did.

Pickleball as a group plan

If you can borrow paddles, pickleball works well as a group plan for people who have never played: a birthday, a team outing or a Sunday morning with friends. Book two courts for eight people, rotate pairs every game, and finish with brunch. Split the court hire equally and the cost per person stays low.
