Quiz Night Malta 2026: Where to Find Pub Quizzes and Teams

Short answer: a quiz night Malta-style is usually a monthly or one-off event rather than a fixed weekly pub quiz, so you need to know where to look. In autumn 2026 the dated options include a Horror Movie Quiz at The Railway Pub and Wine in Birkirkara on Wednesday 28 October (19:00–22:00, €8 alone, €20 for three, €35 for a team of up to six) and three midweek quiz nights at the Valletta Waterfront on 11, 18 and 25 November (16+). For a weekly fixture, The Hatter Irish Pub in Gżira lists a free-entry trivia night every Wednesday at 20:00. Henry J. Bean’s in St George’s Bay runs periodic quiz nights for teams of 2–8, and seasonal quizzes such as the Europe Day Quiz Night come round each year. You can go with a team, or go alone and ask to join one.

A quiz is one of the best plans in Malta for meeting people who are not into clubbing. It gives you something to talk about, a reason to sit at the same table for two hours, and a natural excuse to swap numbers: “same team next month?”. This guide lists where quizzes have been running in 2026 and how to get on a team.

Last checked: October 2026. Quiz dates change often; always check the organiser’s page before you go.

Why no simple “every Tuesday at the same pub” list? Malta’s quiz scene runs more on events than on weekly fixtures, and pubs change hosts and nights often. The quizzes above are the ones we could confirm on the organiser’s own page or ticket listing. Other pubs and social clubs advertise quizzes on their social media from time to time, so it is worth following the venues near you.

The venues and organisers

The Railway Pub and Wine, Birkirkara

On Wednesday 28 October 2026, Koi Events hosts a Horror Movie Quiz Night at the pub on Triq Fleur-de-Lys, from 19:00 to 22:00, with questions on the classics, from The Shining to Poltergeist, according to the Eventbrite listing. You can enter alone (€8), as a trio (€20) or as a team of up to six (€35), and refunds are available up to seven days before. Costumes are optional but encouraged, so it doubles as a Halloween night out.

Valletta Waterfront

The waterfront’s events programme lists Quiz Nights on Wednesday 11, 18 and 25 November 2026: an easy-going midweek trivia evening hosted by Ron Briffa, open to anyone aged 16 and over. The organisers suggest rounding up friends, classmates or colleagues, which makes it a good plan for a language-school class or an office team. The old harbour stores make a good setting, with a walk along the water afterwards. Check the waterfront’s events page for times and booking.

The Hatter Irish Pub, Gżira

The closest thing to a classic weekly pub quiz we found: The Hatter in Gżira lists a free-entry Trivia Night every Wednesday from 20:00 on the Maltavents listings site. Gather a team, or turn up and ask the host to point you to a table that needs players. It is also a short walk from the Sliema seafront if you want a drink by the sea afterwards.

Spritz Social Den, Gżira

The same neighbourhood’s Spritz Social Den has hosted one-off quiz nights, such as a Friday trivia night on 22 May 2026 with rounds on general knowledge, science, geography, history, and food and drink, and voucher prizes. Check its listings for the next one.

Henry J. Bean’s, St George’s Bay

The American bar and grill at the Corinthia in St George’s Bay runs quiz nights for teams of two to eight, with prizes for the top team and complimentary parking at the Corinthia for all teams. Its quiz page still showed the 29 April 2026 edition (19:45) as the latest when we checked in October, so watch it for the next date. It has also run themed quizzes, such as a Disney quiz night.

Europe Day Quiz Night

The University of Malta’s Institute for European Studies and the European Commission’s representation in Malta have run a Europe Day Quiz Night in several years, including 2022, 2024 and 2026. The 2026 edition was on 5 May, from 18:30 to 21:30 at St Michael Hospice in Santa Venera. Expect questions on Europe and the EU; it is a good one for students and newcomers, and the next edition is likely to be announced in spring.

How to find the next quiz yourself

Because so much of the scene is one-off events, a little routine helps. Search Eventbrite for Malta and filter by the coming weeks; that is where the Railway Pub’s horror quiz was listed. Check the events pages of bigger venues such as the Valletta Waterfront every month or so, follow the social media pages of the pubs and bars near where you live, and keep an eye on university, student and expat groups, which often run quizzes in autumn and spring. When you find a quiz you like, ask the host when the next one is: regulars usually hear first.

How to join a quiz team as a newcomer

Turning up alone to a quiz feels harder than it is. Most teams are happy to add a person, especially if they are short, and some organisers will put solo bookers together if you ask. How to do it:

  1. Book as an individual where you can. The Railway Pub quiz has an €8 individual ticket. Ask the organiser if they can put you with a team.
  2. Arrive early. Teams form and settle before the first round. Ten minutes early is when people are open to adding someone.
  3. Ask the host. Quiz hosts know which teams are short. “I’m on my own, is there a team that needs one more?” works almost every time.
  4. Bring a niche. Teams love someone who knows football, 90s music, geography or films. Mention yours.
  5. Bring a friend of a friend. Two newcomers are an instant mini-team; four is a full one.

What to say to a table: “Hi, I’m new in Malta and came on my own. Any chance I could join your team? I’m decent at geography and terrible at sport.” It is self-deprecating, specific and very hard to refuse.

How a quiz night works

  • Teams: usually 2–8 people, depending on the quiz. Check the maximum before you invite everyone.
  • Rounds: general knowledge plus themed rounds (music, pictures, films). Some quizzes add audio or visual rounds.
  • Phones: away. Using your phone gets teams disqualified, and nobody wants to be that team.
  • Scoring and prizes: answers are marked between rounds; the winning team usually gets a prize, sometimes a voucher or drinks.
  • Timing: evening starts between 19:00 and 21:00, and most quizzes last two to three hours.
  • Food and drinks: most venues serve both; order before the quiz starts to avoid missing questions.

Who pays at a quiz night

  • Entry: where there is a team ticket, split it equally (the Railway Pub’s €35 team ticket is under €6 each for six people).
  • Drinks and food: pay your own, or go round by round within the team.
  • Prizes: share them, or let the newcomer keep the voucher. It is a nice way to make sure they come back.

Quiz etiquette that keeps you invited back

  • Phones stay in pockets, including on the way to the bar. Even an innocent glance at a message looks bad mid-round.
  • Whisper answers. Neighbouring tables can hear more than you think, and shouting out a music round answer is the fastest way to annoy the room.
  • Let the newcomer answer. If someone new on the team knows the answer, let them write it down. It is how people feel part of the team.
  • Accept the host’s ruling. Arguing over a spelling or a disputed answer rarely changes the score and always slows the night down.
  • Order between rounds. Bar staff are busiest at the breaks, so plan drinks early and tip if service is good.

Hosting your own quiz night

If there is no quiz on the night you want, run one. A home or café quiz is one of the easiest plans to host for six to twenty people, and it works brilliantly for bringing together friends from different parts of your life.

  • Pick a venue that says yes. A café or bar with a quiet back room is ideal; ask the owner in advance, since a full room midweek is usually welcome. Otherwise, a living room with a few borrowed chairs is enough.
  • Write five rounds of eight to ten questions. Mix general knowledge with a picture round, a music round and a round about Malta, which levels the field between locals and newcomers.
  • Print answer sheets and pens for each team, and keep a simple scoreboard visible.
  • Set the teams yourself. Mixing people who do not know each other is the whole point; four per team is a good size.
  • Keep it to about two hours, including breaks, and finish with a small prize: a box of pastries or the first round of drinks.
  • Agree on money upfront. If there is an entry fee for prizes or the room, say how much in the invitation; otherwise everyone pays their own drinks.

The hardest part is the questions, not the night. Ask one or two friends to write a round each, and you have a quiz in an evening.

Organising your own quiz team

Want a regular team? Pick one quiz series, commit to the same night each month, and invite a mix of people: someone who knows sport, someone who knows music, someone who reads the news. Post the plan with the date, the venue and the cost per person, and keep one or two seats open for newcomers. Teams that welcome new people tend to last; teams that do not tend to fizzle out when someone moves away, which in Malta happens a lot.

Combine it with a night out

Quiz nights end early enough to carry on. From St George’s Bay, Paceville is a few minutes’ walk; see our St Julian’s nightlife guide. From the Valletta Waterfront or Sliema, our Malta nightlife guide has the options. If you prefer something active before the quiz, an early evening session at the climbing gym in Qormi works too.

Getting home. Most quizzes finish by 22:00–23:00, before regular day routes stop on many lines. If you are out later, night routes run on set times with a €3 fare (free with a personalised tallinja card), and Bolt, eCabs and Uber all operate. From Birkirkara and the Valletta Waterfront, check the last bus before the final round.
